San Jose, located in the Bay Area of California just south of San Francisco, is home to a large array of tech companies including Adobe, eBay, and PayPal. Whether you are looking for tourist attractions or a walk in the park, San Jose has plenty to offer after 5:00 pm.
Winchester Mystery House
The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion that used to belong to Sarah Winchester. The legend is, Sarah Winchester believed that she was being haunted by the ghosts of individuals killed by the Winchester rifle, the gun that made her husband’s family so wealthy. Sarah was convinced that she needed to continuously build onto this house, 24 hours a day, to confuse the spirits and have loud noises to scare them away. This bizarre home has over 100 rooms that you can tour.
Tours last just over an hour, and tickets cost $39 for adults. The website recommends that you check the daily tour availability to see when the house will be closed. I have gone on a tour as late as 7:00 pm.
Famous Tech Garages
If you have access to a car, you can visit historic garages in Silicon Valley, where famous companies were first founded. You can’t walk right up to these properties as there are many “Do not Trespass” signs, however you are welcome to take photos from the street. Remember to be respectful, as these garages are located in residential neighborhoods.
The HP Garage is where William Hewlett and David Packard first gathered to build their first product: an audio oscillator. This garage is considered the birth place of Silicon Valley. Considered a California Historical Landmark, this garage also has a plaque right outside the home. The garage is located at 367 Addison Avenue, Palo Alto California.
The garage where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first Apple computers can be found in Los Altos. While this home was recently named a national historical landmark as well, you will know this home by the signs out front. This garage is located at 2066 Crist Drive, Los Altos California.
The Google garage, which Larry Page and Sergey Brin once rented to build the company, can be found in Menlo Park. This garage is located at 232 Santa Margarita Avenue, Menlo Park California.
Municipal Rose Garden
The Municipal Rose Garden in San Jose is a gorgeous garden to visit in the evening. It is best to visit the garden between April and November to smell the roses. Over 4,000 rose shrubs with 189 varieties of roses can be found here, making the garden a popular spot for family and wedding photographs. Park right outside the park, and enter for free.
Sporting Events
Near San Jose is Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium, which is home to the San Francisco 49ers. Levi’s Stadium also hosted Super Bowl 50 for the NFL. In 2015, the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers at this stadium. You can visit the stadium and take photographs out front, or you can actually attend a game. There are a few restaurants located at the stadium as well.
The SAP Center is home to the San Jose Sharks, a hockey team in the NHL. Visit the SAP Center to attend a game, with tickets available during the week.
Shopping & Dining
If you are looking for somewhere to eat after work, San Pedro Square Market is an excellent choice. Like a food court, the market has a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. If your team can’t decide what they want to eat, San Pedro Square Market allows you to order from whichever delicious food stand you would like, but still sit together. This is also a popular location for happy hour.
If you are looking for a higher-end dining experience, Santana Row has a strip of restaurants and luxury shops to offer. Many of the restaurants also have patio seating, so you can people watch while enjoying the California weather.
San Jose is a popular destination for work trips, due to the amount of companies starting up in the area. Being within Silicon Valley gives the opportunity to network with a lot of smart individuals. Fortunately, this South Bay area has plenty to offer in the evening – from delicious dining to spooky houses to tour.
