The grand city of Nizams, Hyderabad, is the capital of Telangana, a recently-formed state in South India. It won’t be wrong to say that after Bangalore, in India, this city has rapidly established itself as the ‘Silicon Valley’ in the country. A rich history, cosmopolitan crowd and a tantalizing mix of the traditional and the modern make it a perfect place for a wanderer at heart. If you are wondering what to do after a busy work day, you are surely going to have a great time.
Drive or a Walk on the Necklace Road
Necklace Road runs along the necklace- shaped Hussain Sagar Lake, the largest artificial lake in Asia. There is a huge statue of Buddha right in the midst of the lake. It is a beautiful sight especially after sunset when there is a fabulous interplay of lights dotting the road. You can admire the views of the lake by walking along the boulevard. Hungry after a nice walk? No worries. Eat Street and Water Front are two places you can grab a bite at. The People’s plaza, located on this boulevard is a recreational area where exhibitions, music shows, sports and other activities are held all through the year.
Lumbini Park
Named after Lumbini of Nepal and dedicated to Lord Buddha, the Lumbini Park is the perfect place to unwind after a hectic day. You can either relax and soak in the sights or take a boat ride. Enjoy the water multimedia show or check out some of the rides. The entry fees are 20 INR for Adult and 10 for a child. While Speed Boating (Adults / Children) is 350 per person, Mechanised Boating for adults is INR 55 per person. The park is open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm every day.
For the Science Buffs
One of the most exciting and interesting places in the city, especially for science enthusiasts, is the Birla Science Museum and Planetarium. It comprises a planetarium, museum, science centre, art gallery as well as a dinosaurium. You can visit it any time between 10:30 am – 8:00 pm and the ticket costs around 160 INR for entry to Planetarium and Science Museum. This is a must see in Hyderabad!
Grab a Bite or a Drink at Banjara Hills
If you are looking to visit one of the most vibrant and hep areas of the city, consider Banjara Hills. This is the place to have a nice drink or meet new people. Try Absolute Barbecues, The Roastery Coffee House or Gourmet Baklava amongst many other great cafes and restaurants. Don’t forget to have the quintessential and famous Hyderabadi Biryani at one of the cafes or the specialty restaurants serving this delicacy made of rice as the main dish.
Heritage, History & More
If you want a taste of history, then consider taking a heritage walk at the Taj Falaknuma Palace. Earlier a palace of the Nizam of Hyderabad, it is now a Taj heritage hotel. Here you can experience the grandeur and magnificence of the 19thcentury like nowhere else. It facilitates spectacular views of the city as it is situated at 2000 feet above the city. The best part is that the walk begins at sunset. See the history come alive in front of you at this enthralling venue. Likewise, if you are a history connoisseur, take a trip to The Qutb Shahi Tombs. These are located in Ibrahim Bagh, close to the famous Golconda Fort, situated on the outskirts of the city. Here, you will get to see tombs and mosques built by the various kings of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.
Get Artsy
If you have time on your hands, don’t miss out on Shilparamam. This is an arts and crafts village which was created with the intention of providing a favourable environment for preservation of traditional handicrafts. You will find a number of unique things to see and do here like a rural museum, rock museum and more. You are greeted with a green lawn surrounded by motifs and sculptures at the entrance of the village.
So it is actually quite a handful, if you consider going around Hyderabad, as there is so much to see and do in the Pearl City after five in the evening. It has something for all kinds of travellers, which is unique to this city.
