How to Get to Chicago’s Gold Coast
Gold Coast is located just north of Chicago’s Loop. It can be reached in about an hour driving from Chicago’s O’Hare, by car or by public transit.
Gold Coast is a relatively small neighborhood. You should easily be able to get around on foot. I don’t recommend biking here, as there is much car traffic & craziness. It’s a tourist area!
Where to Eat in Chicago’s Gold Coast
Velvet Taco // Velvet taco is the top pick for best cheap eats in Gold Coast. It’s great for a quick bite, lunch or drunk food. It’s so popular at night that the lines often extend all the way into the second story.
Somerset // This mid-century modern restaurant has fantastic seasonal menus. They also have an excellent cocktail menu & great wines. This is a great date night restaurant in Chicago.
Spiaggia // Spiaggia is most famous for its Michelin star status. It’s an impressive fine-dining Italian option.
Three Arts Cafe // This Cafe is located in a high end furniture store, Restoration Hardware. It’s the ultimate Gold Coast brunch destination. The Cafe itself is set in a garden with fountains and ornate chandeliers.
Palm Court // Considered the best high tea experience in Chicago, the Drake Hotel’s Palm Court is something to check off the bucket list. It’s famous for having hosted the Queen & Princess Diana. Be sure to make your reservation when there is live harp music!

What to Do in Chicago’s Gold Coast
360 Chicago // This observation deck is located in the John Hancock center. The Hancock is a Chicago icon, and one of the most recognizable buildings in the skyline. In addition to 360 Chicago, the Hancock is also the setting of a cool rooftop bar. Visit the Signature Room for great views of Navy Pier & craft cocktails.
Shop on the Magnificent Mile // The Magnificent Mile extends south towards the Chicago River, but it has it’s origin in Gold Coast. These are the high end shops, although you can find shopping for any price range along Michigan Avenue. Water Tower, and the Water Tower Place Mall, are particularly popular.
Enjoy Oak Street Beach // This is a popular beach during summertime, and also has volleyball courts. You can rent a chair here for $10 and an umbrella for $40.
Visit the International Museum of Surgical Sciences // This is one of the most unique museums in Chicago.
Museum of Contemporary Art // This is another cool museum in Gold Coast. It’s smaller and you could easily cover it in 1-2 hours.
