Amarillo After Five: Things to do at Night

Looking for things to do in Amarillo at night? Maybe you are in this Texas town looking for sightseeing after work, or maybe you’re stopping  in Amarillo on your way to a new destination. If you’ve got an evening in Amarillo, there are still some pretty interesting places to see after 5:00 pm.

Coyote Bluff Cafe

This Amarillo restaurant was featured on the very first episode of Man vs Food, and our waitress had even worked the day that the crew came to film it! This unique diner has a variety of delicious burgers to choose from, and has a beer tub in the middle of the restaurant. There aren’t many tables so you may have to wait for a little while, but the wait was worth it. Keep in mind that they only accept cash.

The Big Texan

The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a combination restaurant/gift shop/motel that is a must-see for first time visitors. The food is pretty alright, lots of good comfort food options available. This restaurant has the 72 oz steak challenge: if you can finish a 72 oz steak and all of its accompanying sides within an hour, you get the meal for free! The last time I was here, a 14 year old kid was taking the challenge. They have a table on a tiny elevated stage, and a clock with a countdown so you know how much time they’ve got left! The Big Texan was also on an episode of Craziest Restaurants in America.

Spray Paint Cars at Cadillac Ranch

The cars at Cadillac Ranch are definitely an interesting site. It’s a bunch of cars sticking out of the ground in the middle of a field that you can spray paint! Bring your own spray paint, or pick up some bottles left behind by other artists. Last time we went it was a little muddy from the night before, but it was still fun to stop by. It’s even nicer to visit after work since it will not be as hot outside, but don’t get there too late as it would be hard to see the cars in the dark.

Tascosa Drive-in Theater

The Tascosa Drive-in Theater in Amarillo, TX is a great evening activity. For $8 a person (bring cash), you can come watch two current movies back to back! The night we went, Suicide Squad and Jason Bourne were playing. I hadn’t seen Suicide Squad yet, so it was perfect! We arrived at around 8:00 pm when the gates opened, however the movies do not start until sundown so it didn’t start until after 9:00 pm. Because it was getting so late and we still had work the next day, we didn’t stay for the second movie. Still a great time – we bought some popcorn and watched the movie from the comfort of our air-conditioned rental car.

See the Texas Show

One evening after work, we drove out to Canyon, TX (about 30 minutes) to see the Texas Show. This outdoor musical is put on at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon. You can start the afternoon by taking pictures at the top of the canyon, and make your way down to the amphitheater where the show takes place with the box office opening at 6:00 pm. For $16 between 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm before the show, you can also get a plate of BBQ. The cheapest tickets are $16.95 for seats on the side of the stage, which I thought was perfectly fine. They’ve got a gift shop and some other entertainment before the show begins at 8:30 pm, lasting a little over two hours. A bit late, but there’s fireworks IN THE CANYON at the end!!
